Pigeon-Proofing Solar Panels in Stockport – Job Done!

Recently, I was called out to a property in Stockport where the homeowner had solar panels installed on two levels – a pitched roof on the main house and a flat roof on the extension. The issue? Birds had made themselves a bit too comfortable under the panels.

They’d built a nest, made quite a mess, and left plenty of droppings on and around the panels. Not only does this look bad, but it can also affect how well the solar panels work and cause damage over time.

So the job was to remove the nest, clean everything up, and install protective mesh to stop it from happening again.

What I Did

First, I safely removed the nest that had formed underneath the panels. Then I gave the whole area a good clean – including the gutters where plenty of bird-droppings and moss had landed over the years.

Once everything was cleaned up, I installed solar panel mesh protection all around the panels. This mesh stops birds from getting underneath the panels again in the future. It was fitted using plastic clips that slide underneath the panels, and I didn’t drill into the panels themselves – that’s important because it keeps the manufacturer’s warranty and insurance intact.

This job also required scaffolding, especially with the two different roof levels. I brought my own scaffolding to get safe access to both areas and keep things efficient.

Once everything was done, I finished by giving the solar panels a proper clean. They’re now looking great, fully protected from birds, and performing better without all the grime and mess.

Why bird-proofing solar panels

If you’ve got solar panels and are seeing a lot of birds around – or hearing them under the panels – it’s a sign they may be nesting or starting to. Here’s why solar panel mesh is worth considering:

  • Stops birds from nesting under panels

  • Helps protect wires and components from damage

  • Keeps the panels cleaner and running more efficiently

  • Avoids long-term mess, noise, and smells

  • Prevents blocked gutters from bird droppings and debris
